wordPLAY

Praise for wordPLAY from past guests:

"I really enjoyed it" - David Mitchell of Peep Show fame

"Bookslam had better watch out - wordPLAY's in the house!" - Bernardine Evaristo

"Not many spoken word nights attract a crowd... but this is definitely a crowd" - Laura Dockrill (formerly known as Dockers MC)

wordPLAY is a grown up spoken word night with sass, a smattering of musical accompaniment and a massively eclectic ever-changing line-up that smacks more of a variety gig than a stuffy sit-down soiree.

Running the first Tuesday of the month (see upcoming dates below) in the Good Ship's hallowed hull, wordPLAY has consistently attracted a large, laid-back and receptive audience of lit-lovers and curious interlopers since its launch in July 2008.

Doors opening at 7pm for a prompt 8pm start, each night features two headline 'Featured Writers', an up-and-coming musical act and four rising 'Guest Stars' who often offer the most polar differences in styles and delivery of the night!

wordPLAY was born out of the notion that no-one wanting to enjoy quality spoken wordy goodness should ever be excluded, or feel outside of the 'clique' that unfortunately some spoken word nights tend to cultivate.

Past performers at wordPLAY include:

Laura Dockrill/Dockers MC; Edinburgh Comedy Award 2009 winner Tim Key; Bernardine Evaristo MBE; Radio 4 'Book of the Week' author John Osborne; magician and poet Nathan Penlington; 'Kilburn Social Club' author Robbie Hudson and many many more...
